About the author

Ben A. Dwamena, MD

Physician, methodologist, teacher, author, and founder of BennyBeauBooks.

From Amanokrom

Ben Adarkwa Dwamena was raised in Amanokrom on Ghana's Akuapem Ridge. The community, the Presbyterian faith in which he was formed, and the example of family members, teachers, and elders gave him an enduring respect for disciplined work, learning, humility, and service.

His education took him from Amanokrom to Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School, Legon, and then to the University of Ghana Medical School. He entered medical school in 1981 and graduated with the Class of 1988. Those years established the clinical foundation of his career and deepened his conviction that knowledge carries an obligation to serve.

Medicine across two continents

After medical training in Ghana, Dr. Dwamena continued his postgraduate education in the United States. His early American training included the Hopkins-affiliated Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, followed by advanced training in nuclear medicine.

He later joined the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs health system, where he built an academic career in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. His work brought together clinical interpretation, research methodology, teaching, and the careful translation of evidence into decisions that matter for patients.

He is Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus of Radiology at the University of Michigan. Across his academic career, he taught physicians and other health professionals, contributed to imaging scholarship, and remained closely engaged with questions of diagnostic evidence and clinical reasoning.

MIDAS and methodological scholarship

Dr. Dwamena is the developer of the MIDAS suite for diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis. The work grew from a practical need: clinicians and researchers required reliable tools for combining evidence about how diagnostic tests perform across different studies, thresholds, populations, and settings.

His methodological writing spans diagnostic evidence synthesis, hierarchical and Bayesian models, reproducible Stata workflows, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, and the communication of statistical results to working researchers. Throughout, his aim is not complexity for its own sake, but methods that are rigorous, transparent, and usable.

A life redirected

In 1998, after completing fellowship training and before beginning his University of Michigan faculty career, Dr. Dwamena sustained a spinal-cord injury in a catastrophic automobile accident. The injury permanently changed the conditions of his life, but it did not end his vocation. It became a hinge: one life closed, and another—different, constrained, but still purposeful—opened.

His experience of disability has shaped his writing about resilience, dignity, dependence, faith, medicine, and grace. Rather than treating redirection as erasure, he writes about the continuity of calling through changed circumstances and the communities that make perseverance possible.

Author and independent publisher

Dr. Dwamena writes across five connected fields: statistical methodology, medical research, theology and devotion, memoir, and civic renewal. His books reflect subjects he has studied professionally, lived personally, or carried as matters of faith and public responsibility.

In 2026 he founded BennyBeauBooks LLC in East Lansing, Michigan. The independent imprint rests on a simple conviction: careful work is itself a form of service, and a well-built book can outlast its author and bless readers the author will never meet. Its motto—Born of Belief. Built to Bless.—expresses both the origin and the purpose of the work.

Now emeritus from academic clinical practice, he continues to write, develop methodological resources, teach through his books, and explore the relationship between knowledge, character, faith, and service.
